High Park
At a recent meeting, the findings and final plans were presented to the public for
comment and input. The report was started in 2007 and construction is expected
to start in September 2010. According to information that I have reviewed, the
city has allocated $500,000 towards the project.
Some of the new items proposed are additional fencing, a large metal staircase,
access to water, bathroom facilities, and an area just for puppies and training.
The city allowed a few days for additional input after the presentation but with
construction slated for this fall and the construction contract about to be awarded,
this is just a moot point.
High Park is the single most defining feature of our neighbourhoods. We need to
take a look at the whole plan over the next 20-40 years instead of incremental
changes. We need to curve the chronic overuse and over-development of the
park. As a dog owner, and regular user of the park, I have never felt a greater
sense of urgency than now.
My personal opinion is that park needs time to repair and regenerate. This
means less traffic, less activity and absolutely no development until we have
gained control over this incredible resource once again.
